Bitcoin Volatility and U.S. Uncertainty: A Japanese View from the Edge

Written from Tokyo. Translated in thought.

Bitcoin Price Swings: From ETF Maturity to Market Melodrama

Just when we thought Bitcoin had settled into its post-ETF maturity phase, the past few weeks happened — and they’ve felt more like a soap opera than a price chart. From my tiny Tokyo desk, I watched the chart bounce like a pachinko ball: ¥15 million to ¥11.7 million, then suddenly ¥14.3 million, back down to ¥12.1 million. Up, down, up, down. A price rhythm with all the grace of a politician’s promise.

Naturally, we asked ourselves: “Why?”
And, as a Japanese observer looking toward America — perhaps too hopefully — I started to wonder not just about Bitcoin, but about something deeper: trust.

U.S. Inflation and Fed Inaction Shake Bitcoin Confidence

It began in February, when U.S. inflation numbers came in just a little hot: CPI at 3.0%, core CPI at 3.3%. Back home, we’d shrug and say “しょうがないね.” But Wall Street? Panic mode.

The Fed crushed hopes for rate cuts, and U.S. bond yields surged. For Bitcoin — still allergic to rising yields — this was a punch to the face. The dollar strengthened, investors fled to safety, and crypto was dumped like last season’s fashion.

I watched as American markets reacted to minor data like they’d seen a ghost. As a Japanese person raised on stability, I can’t help but ask: Is this really the economic leadership the world expects?

Bitcoin ETFs Trigger Historic Outflows Amid Rate Uncertainty

When U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs were approved in early 2024, we thought it was Bitcoin’s Wall Street debutante ball. Finally, institutional money was coming! But by February 2025, the party looked more like a hangover.

On Feb 25, nearly $937 million fled Bitcoin ETFs in a single day — a historic outflow. In Japan, we’d call that ものすごい.

Why? The logic was brutal but simple: no rate cuts → attractive U.S. Treasuries → less need for speculative assets. The Americans built a bridge to mass adoption, then lit it on fire when the yield curve shifted. Again, we’re left puzzled. Why prepare so well for a future you seem unwilling to wait for?

Crypto Whales Buy the Dip After Triggering Selloffs

Of course, volatility attracts whales — and this month, they feasted. In late February, a single selloff of 6,800 BTC (around ¥50 billion) sent prices tumbling. On Coinbase, spot trading volume spiked. The “Coinbase Premium” — normally a sign of U.S. demand — turned negative. It felt like someone big in America was pulling out.

Then came the bounce. New whale wallets (holding 100+ BTC) began multiplying. Who are these people? What do they know? From Tokyo, it’s hard not to feel like the small fish in a very confusing ocean.

Trump’s Crypto Stance and Tariff Drama Keep Markets Nervous

Enter President Trump — again. Once dubbed “crypto-friendly,” he returned to office only to cool the market’s hopes by stating he wouldn’t be adding Bitcoin to U.S. reserves anytime soon. That alone sparked a mini selloff. Then came tariffs. Again.

Every time Trump talks, the market twitches. His words act like a drunk uncle at a wedding: unpredictable, occasionally charming, mostly exhausting. We Japanese traders sit, green tea in hand, wondering, “Will he tweet before bedtime?”

Bitcoin Volatility Isn’t Random — It’s Strategically Chaotic

In the end, what appeared chaotic may have been oddly structured:

  • Inflation rattled the Fed → market lost its rate-cut fantasy
  • ETFs faced mass outflows → Bitcoin plunged
  • Whales sold high, bought low → classic
  • Trump stirred the pot → as always

So yes, it was volatile. Yes, it was dramatic. But it wasn’t random. There was method in the madness. From where I sit — in a country still trying to figure out its own digital yen — America’s economic theater continues to baffle and fascinate.

I expected leadership. I witnessed improvisation.
I hoped for stability. I got spectacle.
But perhaps that’s what makes the crypto markets so American in spirit — unpredictable, bold, occasionally brilliant, and always hard to ignore.

Final Thoughts: Japan Watches as Bitcoin Breathes

Japan watches.
Bitcoin breathes.
And the story continues.
